Although sweating is a normal body process, but when it becomes excessive it starts to interfere with normal routine life and social interactions. There can be various causes behind excessive sweating which can be psychological as well as physical. The condition characterized by excessive sweating is known as ‘hyperhidrosis’ in medical terms. This condition usually effect the face, underarms, feet, palms of the hands or groin area. However, this condition is not related to the psychological effects. It is mainly caused due to the overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system that results in the hyperactivity of the sweat glands. Hyperhidrosis is prevalent among 1% of the population and may have hereditary groundings.
Palmar hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating of Palms
In some people, the palms of the hands sweat excessively resulting in creating difficulties in their normal routine work and social life. Sufferers often avoid having physical social contacts like shaking hands and doing any writing or related tasks which involves the use of hands. The sweating reaches to the extent that the moisture starts dripping from the hands leading to embarrassment and social isolation. The condition occurs for no visible external reason.
Botox treatment for hyperhidrosis
If you suffer from severe palmar hyperhidrosis and you have tried every possible topical treatment option to control it without any results then Botox injections can be an effective option. Botox injections have been approved for the treatment of primary axillary hyperhidrosis in 2004. The research studies also demonstrate that the excessive sweating of hands can be effectively and safely treated through botox injections.
Botox acts by blocking the secretion of the neurotransmitters from the nerves that are responsible for activating the sweat glands. The working of sweat glands if turned off in the area where botox in injected. The injections are injected just below the skin surface where the toxin stays for a certain period of time after which its effect wears off.
In each palm, almost 50-100 Botox units are injected and the injections are placed 1-1.5cm apart. On average, 15-20 injections of botox are injected into the affected area and the complete procedure takes almost 30-45 minutes. The hands are likely to experience muscle weakness and numbness following the treatment along with mild pain but this condition is temporary and usually subsides in few days.
The research studies showed that the botox treatment is about 80% to 90% effective in controlling the palmar hyperhidrosis. It is a temporary solution and the repeat treatment is required after almost 6 months as the effects of botox wears off.
